UK to reopen Oxford’s Cowley Branch Line by 2029, investing £120M for faster trains, new stations, and jobs.
A £120 million government investment will reopen Oxford’s Cowley Branch Line for passenger service by 2029, more than 60 years after it closed in 1963.
The project, part of a £500 million plan to boost the Oxford-Cambridge corridor, includes two new stations at Cowley and Littlemore, with journeys to central Oxford taking under 10 minutes and direct links to London Marylebone twice hourly.
The line, currently used for freight to the BMW Mini Plant, will help reduce congestion, support economic growth, and create up to 10,000 jobs.
Additional infrastructure like bridges, cycling paths, and improved bus links will be developed.
Construction is set to begin after 2026, with detailed design starting in early 2026 and an operator to be appointed later.
