Tens of millions of red crabs on Christmas Island, an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean, have begun their annual migration to the coast to breed, triggered by the start of the Southern Hemisphere’s summer rains.
Up to 100 million crabs travel from forest burrows to the shoreline, crossing roads and paths, prompting residents to use leaf blowers and rakes to help them safely pass.
