Russia expands religious influence in Africa via new center translating texts and training clergy.
The Russian Orthodox Church has launched a new spiritual and educational center in Africa under its Patriarchal Exarchate, named after Apostle Mark and led by Archpriest Tigry Khachatryan.
The center will translate religious texts into African languages, produce media, and support clergy across over 30 African nations.
This expansion, part of a broader effort since the exarchate’s 2021 founding amid a split with the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria, coincides with Russia’s growing influence on the continent.
In August 2025, 30 African priests visited Russia for a conference and media training.
