The Port of Townsville shipped 38,500 tonnes of chickpeas to India and Pakistan, marking its first bulk export.
The Port of Townsville has completed its first dry bulk export of chickpeas to India and Pakistan, shipping 38,500 tonnes from North Queensland growers.
The milestone, enabled by a new on-site storage and loading facility, marks the first time chickpeas have been exported in bulk from the port, previously shipped in containers or sent south.
The shipment, the result of a five-year collaboration involving Sizer & Cogill, Agristorage & Logistics, and Louis Dreyfus Company, supports regional diversification and highlights the port’s growing export capacity.
Despite a price drop from 2024’s peak, strong yields and favorable growing conditions contributed to the success, with over 14,000 hectares planted—nearly double last year’s figure.
