Measles virus found in East Kauai wastewater; no cases yet, but vaccination urged.
The Hawaii Department of Health detected the measles virus in a wastewater sample from East Kauai County, marking the first such finding on the island.
Collected on September 24, 2025, the sample tested positive for genotype D8, a wild strain, and was confirmed on October 20.
No clinical cases have been identified.
The result is part of a national wastewater surveillance effort, with 42 states reporting measles cases as of October 21.
The DOH urges vaccination, especially for infants over 6 months, and advises those with symptoms or recent travel to outbreak areas to isolate and seek medical care.
