Mathews County funds $600,000 renovation of old club into fire station, with construction starting in 2026.
Mathews County approved $600,000 in funding for renovations to the former Boys and Girls Club, transforming it into a new fire station for the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department, with construction set to begin after bids are issued in January or February.
The project, supported by local contractors and volunteers, is funded from a $5 million interim pool and will be repaid through future bonds.
Meanwhile, Mathews County Public Schools are installing weapons detectors and environmental sensors at two schools, using $84,800 in state funds, with staff training underway and a School Resource Officer grant pending.
The school board also extended Superintendent Dr. David S. Daniel’s contract through 2030.
A town hall meeting is scheduled for October 23 to address community concerns.
