Julian Hartley resigns as CQC head over conflict of interest in Leeds maternity inquiry.
Sir Julian Hartley has stepped down as chief executive of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) amid an independent inquiry into maternity care at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, where he previously led for a decade.
He cited concerns that his past role could undermine public trust in the CQC’s investigation into at least 56 preventable baby and two maternal deaths.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting confirmed the inquiry is underway, with a panel being assembled, though senior midwife Donna Ockenden cannot lead it due to other commitments.
The probe is part of wider government efforts, including a rapid review by Baroness Amos, to improve maternity services across England.
Dr Arun Chopra will serve as interim chief executive while a permanent replacement is sought.
