Iowa will audit educator licensing and background checks after former superintendent Ian Roberts’ arrest over visa and gun charges.
Iowa’s State Auditor’s Office will audit the state’s educator licensing and background check processes following the arrest of former Des Moines superintendent Ian Roberts, who was charged with illegal gun possession and overstaying his visa.
Senator Tony Bisignano requested the review, citing failures in detecting Roberts’ false U.S. citizenship claim and unverified credentials during licensing.
The audit will assess procedures used by the Department of Education and the Board of Educational Examiners, as the state implements federal E-Verify and SAVE systems to verify work authorization.
The Department of Education says it does not verify immigration status, leaving that to employers, but is reviewing Des Moines Public Schools’ hiring practices.
The review aims to strengthen oversight and public trust.
