Indonesia will introduce Portuguese as a priority language in schools and universities, President Prabowo Subianto announced on October 23, 2025, during a state visit by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The move aims to strengthen bilateral ties, following a record $6.3 billion in trade between the nations in 2024.
The visit included the signing of eight memorandums of understanding and participation in the Brazil-Indonesia Economic Forum and the 47th ASEAN Summit in Malaysia, where Lula will hold talks with ASEAN leaders and receive an honorary doctorate.
