Indiana asks public to report Mediterranean gecko sightings; non-native lizards found near lights or buildings.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is asking residents to report sightings of Mediterranean geckos, small, non-native lizards from the Mediterranean and northern Africa, typically 4 to 5 inches long with tan or pink bodies and brown blotches.
Found near outdoor lights or inside buildings, they feed on insects and rely on heated structures to survive Indiana’s winters.
The DNR says they pose no threat to ecosystems and encourages public reports, especially with photos, sent to HerpSurveys@dnr.IN.gov to track their spread.
