The Polynesian Voyaging Society's canoes Hōkūlea and Hikianalia left Rarotonga on October 22, 2025, beginning a two-week voyage to Aotearoa (New Zealand), expected to end in early to mid-November.
The journey marks 40 years since Hōkūlea’s first arrival in New Zealand in 1985 and continues the legacy of traditional wayfinding navigation.
The crew, including experienced and emerging navigators, trained in the Cook Islands for two months with local support.
Public events are planned in Waitangi, Auckland, and Aurere to honor ties between Polynesian and Māori communities.
After the visits, the canoes will enter dry dock for maintenance and remain in New Zealand for about six months to avoid the South Pacific hurricane season before resuming the Moananuiākea Voyage in 2026.
