Five candidates launched the NDP's 2026 leadership race amid efforts to rebuild after a major election loss.
The New Democratic Party’s 2026 leadership race has launched with five candidates—Avi Lewis, Heather McPherson, Rob Ashton, Tanille Johnston, and Tony McQuail—making their first public appearances at a forum in Ottawa hosted by the Canadian Labour Congress.
The event, moderated by CLC president Bea Bruske, aims to introduce the candidates as the party seeks to rebuild after its worst electoral performance, dropping to seven seats and losing official status in the April 2025 election.
Bruske stressed the need for simpler, more accessible messaging on urgent issues like the cost of living, housing, and job insecurity, noting many traditional NDP supporters shifted to the Liberals amid fears over U.S. tariffs and political uncertainty under President Donald Trump.
The race will culminate in a leadership vote at the party’s March 29, 2026, convention in Winnipeg.
