A ferry traveling to Waiheke Island caught fire in the Hauraki Gulf on October 23, 2025, prompting a rescue operation.
The Island Direct, a 22-meter catamaran operated by Fullers, was returning to Auckland when it caught fire near Matiatia Bay Wharf around 3:40 p.m. All 18 passengers and six crew members were safely evacuated by Coastguard and police boats after a mayday call was made.
Rough seas prevented a safe transfer, and one man jumped into the water but was rescued.
No injuries were reported.
Fire and Emergency personnel arrived by boat.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and Maritime New Zealand will lead the inquiry.
