European firms Airbus, Thales, and Leonardo to merge satellite units into Project Bromo by 2027 to rival Starlink.
European aerospace firms Airbus, Thales, and Leonardo have agreed to merge their satellite operations into a new joint venture, Project Bromo, set to launch in 2027 to challenge Elon Musk’s Starlink.
The entity will employ 25,000 people and generate €6.5 billion in annual revenue, with Airbus holding 35% and Thales and Leonardo each 32.5%, under joint governance.
The merger aims to strengthen Europe’s strategic space autonomy, boost competitiveness against low Earth orbit satellite constellations, and deliver cost synergies after five years.
The deal is pending regulatory approval and follows months of negotiations, with no further job cuts announced despite prior reductions of about 3,000 positions.
