A Canadian trade group is urging the federal government to expand customs clearance at six smaller ports on the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes to boost container shipping, improve supply chain efficiency, and reduce reliance on U.S. ports.
Currently, only five major Canadian ports have on-site Canada Border Services Agency officers, limiting capacity and contributing to underutilization of the seaway.
The Chamber of Marine Commerce says equipping inland ports like Hamilton, Windsor, and Quebec City with customs facilities could generate $132 million annually and support key industries.
Municipal leaders and the CBSA have expressed support, though expansion remains pending.
