Canada’s BMI Group bought the closed Espanola mill, plans bioeconomy hub with renewable energy and job revival.
The Espanola mill, closed in 2024 after Domtar ceased operations, has been acquired by Canada’s BMI Group, which plans to redevelop the site as Bioveld North Inc.
The purchase, finalized in early 2025, includes the site’s hydroelectric dam, which will continue operating under BMI’s Penstock Power LP, retaining 32 staff and supplying renewable energy to the grid.
BMI, known for repurposing shuttered paper mills, aims to transform the facility into a hub for bioeconomy and clean energy projects, with potential for wood product manufacturing and possible reactivation of two paper machines.
The company has engaged local First Nations in planning discussions, and Espanola Mayor Douglas Gervais called the deal a vital step toward economic revitalization, offering hope for former workers to return in new roles.
