A British Columbia judge has allowed a filmmaker access to courtroom videos and transcripts from four murder cases involving the controversial Mr. Big police tactic, following a B.C.
Appeal Court ruling.
The footage, related to high-profile cases including the 1994 Rafay family killings in Washington state, features confessions obtained by RCMP officers posing as organized crime figures.
Though illegal in the U.S. and most countries, Canada’s Supreme Court has upheld the method under strict guidelines.
The filmmaker, representing Network Entertainment of Vancouver, will use the materials in a documentary exploring the ethical and legal implications of the technique, which has raised concerns over coercion and suspects’ rights.
