Australia’s banana industry is opposing a government review into allowing imports from the Philippines, citing risks of introducing deadly plant diseases like black sigatoka and moko, which are present in the Philippines but not in Australia.
The Australian Banana Growers Council warns the move could threaten the $1.3 billion domestic industry, 18,000 jobs, and 540 family farms.
Though Australia currently bans fresh banana imports and has maintained strict biosecurity, the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is assessing alternative measures in response to a Philippines request and World Trade Organisation obligations.
A technical visit to the Philippines is planned for late 2025, with an issues paper expected in early 2026.
Growers argue Australia already produces enough bananas and say the review is a costly, unnecessary risk.
