After catastrophic floods in Valencia, Spain, in October 2024 that killed over 200 people, a team at Valencia's Polytechnic University has rescued and restored approximately 340,000 water-damaged photographs.
Using careful cleaning, decontamination, and digitization, students and staff have restored about 75% of the images, many of which captured personal milestones like birthdays and vacations.
The effort, led by Professor Esther Nebot, began when damaged albums were being discarded, and now serves as a sanctuary for irreplaceable family memories, offering emotional healing to displaced families.
