Zimbabwe approves new university staff salaries, pending funding, and expands teacher training.
Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has approved a new salary structure for university lecturers and staff, aiming to address long-standing pay issues and improve higher education quality.
The move, confirmed by Permanent Secretary Professor Fanuel Tagwira, awaits final funding approval from the Ministry of Finance, which estimates a need for over ZiG46 billion to implement the changes and support infrastructure projects under the Public Sector Investment Programme.
The government also plans to expand teacher training by establishing new secondary teacher colleges in all provinces, including one in Mhangura, and upgrading existing primary training institutions.
The Zimbabwe Manpower Development Fund (Zimdef) is now fully operational and funding education projects, including the Midlands State University Law School.
Parliamentary leaders have urged increased budget support and emphasized accountability in fund usage.
