UK seeks Balkan return hubs for asylum seekers, but no deals expected despite summit.
The UK is negotiating with Western Balkan nations—including Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo—to establish return hubs for processing failed asylum seekers, aiming to reduce illegal Channel crossings.
While Albania’s PM Edi Rama firmly rejected hosting hubs, Montenegro’s PM Milojko Spajic said it’s not currently on the migrant route due to poor rail infrastructure and would only consider a hub with a 10 billion euro investment.
The UK is pushing regional cooperation to disrupt smuggling networks after an estimated 22,000 migrants were smuggled through the Balkans last year.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood hosted a summit with regional leaders, but no agreements are expected.
