A UK mother pushes for equal access to assisted dying, following her husband’s death and a probe that found no charges.
Louise Shackleton, a North Yorkshire mother, is urging UK lawmakers to ensure assisted dying is accessible to all, not just the wealthy, after her husband Antony died at Switzerland’s Dignitas in December 2024 from motor neurone disease.
She was investigated for nearly a year but will not face charges, with authorities concluding prosecution was not in the public interest.
Shackleton highlighted the financial barrier to accessing assisted dying abroad, advocating for the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which would allow terminally ill adults with less than six months to live to apply for assisted death, subject to medical and panel approval.
The bill passed second reading in the House of Lords but faces scrutiny over safeguards and risks to vulnerable people.
If both Houses agree, implementation could occur by 2029 or 2030.
