UK hospital first in Europe to treat liver cancer with non-invasive ultrasound, enabling same-day discharge.
Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge has become the first in Europe to treat a liver cancer patient using histotripsy, a non-invasive ultrasound procedure, outside of clinical trials.
The treatment, approved via the UK’s Unmet Clinical Need Authorisation, destroyed tumors using focused sound waves without surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy, allowing patient Roger Jackson, 80, to be discharged the next day.
The technology, developed in the U.S. and FDA-approved in 2023, has been used in over 2,000 patients globally.
NHS leaders and Health Secretary Wes Streeting hailed the move as a major advance, promising faster recovery, shorter hospital stays, and improved access to innovative cancer care.
