Two invasive opossums were found in Honolulu and one in Hilo; all were euthanized and tested for disease.
Two opossums were captured at Honolulu Harbor on October 21, 2025, at Pier 1 and Pier 51, following employee reports of sightings in container yards. A third opossum was found in Hilo in September. All three were humanely euthanized and tested for rabies, with the Hilo animal testing negative; results for the Honolulu animals are pending. Opossums, native to North America, are invasive in Hawaii and can carry parasites and diseases. The Hawaii Department of Agriculture urges the public to report non-native animal sightings via the PEST HOTLINE at 808-643-PEST.
