A taekwondo instructor was sentenced to 14 months in prison for sexually abusing a teenage girl at his school and sending explicit messages.
Stephen John Wheatland, a 55-year-old taekwondo instructor, was sentenced to 14 months in prison for sexually touching a teenage girl six times and sending explicit messages, including calling her his "future wife" and describing sexual acts.
The abuse occurred at his martial arts school in Raymond Terrace, captured on CCTV, and he attempted to delete footage and hide evidence.
He pleaded guilty to five counts of sexually touching a child and one count of possessing child abuse material.
Magistrate Gregory Moore imposed a seven-month non-parole period and ordered him to stay on the child protection register for 15 years, citing victim-blaming and lack of insight.
Wheatland lost his business, memberships, and relationships.
The case emerged after a notification on his phone prompted confrontation.
