The Supreme Court has asked the central government to respond to a public interest litigation calling for a nationwide ban on online gambling platforms disguised as social or e-sports games.
The petition, filed by the Centre for Accountability and Systemic Change, urges the court to block unregistered apps, halt financial transactions via UPI and other systems, and investigate offshore gaming firms allegedly owing ₹2 lakh crore in unpaid taxes.
It highlights widespread harm, including addiction, financial ruin, and suicides, with over 65 crore Indians playing such games annually.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for two weeks later.
