South Africa’s court orders former President Jacob Zuma to repay $1.6 million in misused public legal funds or face asset seizure.
A South African court has ordered former President Jacob Zuma to repay R28.9 million ($1.6 million), including interest, for state-funded legal fees used in his private criminal cases, with a 60-day deadline to comply or risk asset seizure, including his presidential pension.
The ruling, issued by Pretoria High Court Judge Anthony Millar, enforces earlier 2018 and 2021 decisions that deemed the use of public funds for Zuma’s legal defense improper.
The debt stems from litigation related to corruption and fraud allegations tied to a 1999 arms deal, and Zuma’s legal team’s defenses were dismissed as irrelevant or previously considered.
The State Attorney must report every three months on collection efforts, and Zuma is also responsible for fees from this enforcement case.
