A rare Kemp’s Ridley turtle, likely swept from its habitat by Storm Amy, was rescued on Scotland’s Isle of Tiree and is now receiving care.
A critically endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle, one of the world’s rarest species, washed up on Scotland’s Isle of Tiree on October 19, over 3,000 miles from its usual U.S. and Mexican habitat.
Likely displaced by Storm Amy’s strong winds, the turtle was found in cold water shock and rescued by ranger Hayley Douglas, who kept it in a cool, controlled environment to prevent fatal temperature changes.
It is now being transported to the SeaLife Centre at Loch Lomond for care.
Experts warn against returning stranded turtles to water or warming them too quickly and urge the public to contact British Divers Marine Life Rescue.
With only 7,000 to 9,000 nesting females left, the species remains endangered, and coastal residents are advised to stay vigilant after storms.
