Nova Scotia approved a plan to build North America’s first coastal whale sanctuary, aiming to relocate captive belugas from Marineland.
Nova Scotia has approved the Whale Sanctuary Project’s plan to build North America’s first coastal refuge for captive whales, granting a 20-year lease for 83 hectares near Wine Harbour.
The project, aiming to house belugas and other marine mammals retired from captivity, will construct a floating net enclosure and requires federal permits before relocation.
Construction can now proceed, with private fundraising underway for the $20-million project, which needs $2 million annually to operate.
The approval follows concerns over animal welfare at Marineland, where multiple deaths have occurred since 2019.
The decision comes amid a cabinet shuffle, with the natural resources minister who recommended approval removed.
