Napa County approved new housing fees on large homes and buildings to fund affordable housing, effective Jan. 16.
Napa County’s Board of Supervisors approved new affordable housing impact fees on Tuesday, increasing charges for large homes and commercial buildings in unincorporated areas, effective January 16.
Fees will range from $43 to $86 per square foot for homes over 2,500 square feet, potentially reaching $344,000 for a 4,000-square-foot home, with smaller homes under 2,500 square feet exempt.
The phased-in fees aim to generate funds for affordable housing in the county’s five cities, where most new housing is built.
The 3-2 vote passed despite opposition from two supervisors who cited concerns over economic impacts and insufficient public outreach.
The measure also encourages accessory dwelling units and aims to limit large homes on farmland.
