A contractor at the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant in Michigan fell into a reactor cavity during fuel reloading on October 21, 2025, sustaining minor injuries and ingesting water.
The plant, which had been decommissioned since 2022 and resumed operations in August 2025, is the first in U.S. history to restart after shutdown.
The worker, wearing required safety gear including a life vest, was quickly rescued, decontaminated, and transferred offsite for medical evaluation.
Radiation levels in the worker’s hair were 300 counts per minute, but officials confirmed exposure was well below regulatory limits.
The individual has since returned to work.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission stated there was no risk to public or personnel safety.
