Michael Bellaire, 43, was convicted in Wyoming County of second-degree murder, first-degree strangulation, and grand larceny in connection with the November 2, 2023, killing of his roommate, Cheryl Cook, 53, in Warsaw, New York.
Prosecutors said he strangled Cook, stole her debit card, and fled to Mexico, where he was captured in October 2024.
Cook’s body was found five days after she was last seen during a welfare check.
The jury reached its verdict after a seven-day trial.
Bellaire is scheduled to be sentenced on January 9, 2026, and could face 25 years to life in prison.
The district attorney’s office said it will recommend the maximum sentence.
