Manitoba is investing $4.5 million in new Indigenous language programs at the University of Winnipeg and University College of the North to support language revitalization.
A Bachelor of Arts in Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe) immersion will launch at the University of Winnipeg, with $2.3 million dedicated to training fluent speakers and teacher certification.
The University College of the North will begin a Bachelor of Indigenous Languages program in Ininimowin (Cree), using the remaining funds to build a Centre for Aboriginal Languages and Culture and cover operations.
Both programs start in January 2026, with applications now open.
Officials say the initiatives strengthen Indigenous identity, support youth well-being, and advance reconciliation through education.
