The Los Angeles Angels have hired former major league catcher Kurt Suzuki as their new manager, replacing Ron Washington after two losing seasons.
Suzuki, 42, played 16 seasons in the majors, including two with the Angels, and earned an All-Star selection in 2014 and a World Series title with Washington in 2019.
He served as a special assistant to general manager Perry Minasian since retiring in 2022 and has no prior managerial experience.
The hiring comes after talks with Albert Pujols fell through.
The Angels, who have missed the playoffs for 11 consecutive seasons and posted a 72-90 record in 2025, are in a rebuilding phase despite a young core featuring Mike Trout, Zach Neto, and Jo Adell.
Suzuki will become the first Hawaiian-born full-time manager in MLB history and one of the few managers of Asian heritage.
