A lithium extraction facility broke ground in Joaquin, Texas, marking the town’s first large-scale development in the critical minerals sector.
The project, a joint effort by Select Water Solutions and Mariana Minerals, will repurpose existing oilfield infrastructure to extract lithium from produced water, avoiding new drilling or mining.
Construction begins in July 2025, with operations expected to start in January 2027.
The facility will create over 200 construction jobs and more than 50 permanent positions, contribute $40 million annually to the local economy, and operate for at least 20 years with minimal environmental impact.
On-site monitoring will ensure compliance with state regulations, and companies plan to partner with local schools for STEM education and internships.
Residents can contact lithium@selectwater.com with questions, and a permit notification is expected later in 2025.
