KiwiRail will suspend Metlink trains in Wellington Oct 25–27, 2025, for major upgrades funded by $143M, using buses as replacement.
KiwiRail will suspend Metlink rail services in Wellington from 25–27 October 2025, replacing them with buses during Labour Weekend to conduct essential infrastructure upgrades.
The work, funded by $143 million from Budget 2025, includes track replacement, slope stabilization, bridge repairs, and level crossing improvements on the Hutt Valley, Kāpiti, and Wairarapa lines.
Around 1km of track will be renewed on the Hutt Valley Line and over 2km on the Kāpiti Line, with repairs to Ava Bridge requiring closure of its pedestrian walkway until mid-2026.
Safety fencing will be installed, and alternative crossings will be available at Ewen or Waione Bridge.
Freight and passenger trains will continue operating during bridge work.
The extended closure allows uninterrupted access for large equipment, supporting long-term network reliability and preparations for faster, more frequent services from 2028/2029.
Travelers are urged to check Metlink’s website, app, or hotline for updates.
