Japan culls 460,000 hens after first avian flu outbreak of season in Hokkaido.
Hokkaido authorities began culling 460,000 laying hens on October 22 after confirming a highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak at a farm in Shiraoi, marking the first case of the season in Japan.
The outbreak, linked to 46 dead chickens found the previous day, affects about 8% of Hokkaido’s egg-laying capacity.
Movement restrictions were imposed on 620,000 hens nearby, and a 120-person task force is managing culling and disinfection, with controls expected to last until late November.
Officials confirmed the food supply remains safe and urged against panic.
