As of October 20, 2025, Israel is detaining 95 Palestinian healthcare workers, including doctors and nurses from Gaza and the West Bank, according to Healthcare Workers Watch and Amnesty International.
Many were seized from hospitals or ambulances while on duty, with Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, among those held without charge under Israel’s Unlawful Combatants Law.
He has faced torture, denied medical care, and had his detention extended for six months.
At least five detained workers have died, five are missing, and 1,722 Palestinian medical personnel have been killed since October 2023.
Of 431 documented detentions, 309 have been released, including 67 in a recent exchange, but 22 remain unaccounted for.
