Greek police arrested 37 in EU farm subsidy fraud ring, involving false claims that siphoned €20M from 2018–2022.
Greek police have arrested 37 people in a nationwide operation targeting a major fraud scheme involving EU agricultural subsidies, with authorities alleging that false land and livestock claims led to around 20 million euros in illicit payments between 2018 and 2022.
The investigation, coordinated with the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, focused on the OPEKEPE agency, which administers 2.5 billion euros in annual EU farm aid.
While most suspects were not farmers, including hospitality workers and private sector employees, the case has prompted a parliamentary probe and raised concerns about systemic corruption and oversight failures in the subsidy system.
