Francisco Pinto Balsemão, former Portuguese prime minister and media tycoon, has died at 88.
He served as prime minister from 1981 to 1983 following the death of Francisco Sá Carneiro in a plane crash, leading a coalition government during a period of political instability.
He played a key role in constitutional reforms, economic liberalization, and Portugal’s accession to the European Economic Community in 1986.
After leaving politics, he expanded the newspaper Expresso into Impresa, a major media group that included television, magazines, and digital platforms.
He also launched Portugal’s first private TV channel, S.I.C., in 1992.
A law graduate and former military officer, he was a central figure in Portugal’s democratic transition and widely recognized as one of the nation’s most influential leaders.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
