Former Fijian Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama has been sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for three years, after being convicted of making unwarranted demands with menace in 2021 to dismiss two police officers.
The High Court in Suva found he abused his power as PM, pressured the acting police commissioner, and deleted related messages.
This marks his second conviction within a year, following a 2023 sentence for obstructing a university investigation.
Bainimarama, who led a 2006 coup and promised to fight corruption, is now unlikely to run in upcoming elections.
The suspended sentence means he will not serve jail time unless he commits another similar offense.
