Former Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Ian Roberts has pleaded not guilty to federal charges including illegal firearm possession and making false statements on his I-9 form during his 2023 hiring.
A Guyanese national who entered the U.S. on a student visa in 1999, Roberts was arrested in October 2025 by ICE after fleeing officers and being found with a loaded handgun and other firearms.
He was denied permanent residence and ordered removed in 2024, and was not legally authorized to work after 2020.
The school district has sued the hiring consultant, and a trial date is expected to be set at a Wednesday hearing.
Roberts remains in federal custody.
