Each year, Exmoor ponies, including the Anchor Herd at Winsford Hill, are gathered for a traditional inspection on Exmoor, where family and friends on horseback and quad bikes round up the privately owned ponies.
Foals are separated from mothers for health checks, microchipping, and evaluation by the Exmoor Pony Society, which decides their future in free-living herds, riding, or conservation grazing.
Foals meeting breed standards are added to the stud book, with fewer than 200 registered annually to preserve genetic diversity.
The practice helps sustain a breed that nearly went extinct during World War II, with only about 50 survivors.
Today, over 500 registered ponies live in 21 herds within Exmoor National Park, and another 3,500 are registered across the UK and abroad.
The inspections are part of a series held across October to support the breed’s long-term survival.
