A Brisbane childcare centre, Busy Bees Coorparoo, was fined $12,500 and ordered to pay $2,105 in legal costs after a five-year-old boy escaped through an emergency exit, crossed two busy roads, and was found by the public.
The court ruled the provider failed to secure the premises, supervise the child, and follow safety policies despite the child’s history of prior escape attempts.
The Queensland Department of Education’s regulatory authority took legal action over lapses in supervision, security, and record-keeping.
Busy Bees apologized, stated the child was unharmed, and said it has since implemented new safety measures including enhanced CCTV, staff training, compliance reviews, and stricter employee onboarding.
