Abingdon council to decide by Oct. 24 on converting former Homebase into an 18,000 sq ft M&S foodhall, part of a national plan to open 12 new stores and create 550 jobs.
Abingdon council is set to decide by October 24 on a proposal to convert the former Homebase site in Fairacres Retail Park into an 18,000 sq ft M&S foodhall, part of a national renewal programme aiming to open 12 new food stores and create 550 jobs.
The plan faces opposition from Bury Street precinct owners, who warn it could harm regeneration efforts, reduce town centre trade by £3.5 million, and hurt nearby retailers.
However, residents support the project for convenience and job creation.
County councillor Neil Fawcett urged acceptance of Fairacres and Tesco as established hubs, advocating for balanced development.
The final decision rests with Vale of White Horse District Council.
