The Whaka 100 mountain bike race in Rotorua drew 3,500 riders worldwide, honoring cyclist Paul Gunn with a new scholarship.
The 19th annual Whaka 100 mountain bike marathon returns to Rotorua’s Whakarewarewa Forest, drawing over 3,500 riders from around the world for six races, including the 173km Giant Miler and the newly integrated Marathon MTB National Championships.
In honor of Paul Gunn, a cyclist who died in July 2024, the event launched the Paul Gunn Scholarship, awarding $4,500 each to two emerging riders under 23.
The race features participants from age three to 73, celebrating endurance, community, and New Zealand’s natural and cultural heritage.
