UK Conservatives oppose Labour’s bill allowing early release for some prisoners, citing safety concerns.
The UK Conservative Party is opposing Labour’s Sentencing Bill, which includes an “earned progression scheme” allowing early release for good-behaving prisoners after serving 33% of standard sentences or 50% of serious ones, with supervision and monitoring.
Conservatives argue the plan could allow rapists, child sex offenders, and other serious criminals to be released early and have proposed amendments to exclude these offenses.
Shadow justice minister Dr Kieran Mullan called the reforms a betrayal of victims, while Labour’s Jake Richards accused the Tories of hypocrisy, blaming their past government for the current prison crisis.
The bill also limits short sentences, extends suspended sentences, improves sentencing transparency, and strengthens victim rights, based on recommendations from former justice secretary David Gauke.
