Thieves stole war memorial plaques in Newcastle, sparking outrage and prompting a citywide audit.
Thieves stole commemorative brass plaques from the Wallsend War Memorial in late September, sparking outrage among veterans and officials who called it a desecration.
The plaques, honoring military service members, were removed from a field gun and granite pillar at Federal Park.
This incident is part of a wider trend in Newcastle since October, with over 40 plaques stolen from Sandgate Cemetery and others from public monuments, including one to the city’s first female lord mayor.
In response, Newcastle councillors unanimously approved a citywide audit to assess stolen and existing plaques, with a research officer now evaluating replacement costs and less valuable materials to deter future thefts.
Council leaders, including Lord Mayor Ross Kerridge, expressed deep sadness, calling the acts disrespectful and urging the public to provide information.
Police are investigating.
