Sydney’s Barangaroo Cutaway, revamped with Indigenous-inspired art and design, opens as a cultural and event space after a $100 million upgrade.
The Barangaroo Cutaway in Sydney, nearing completion after a $100 million redevelopment, features tree-like sculptures inspired by the Port Jackson fig and First Nations design elements, including forms resembling traditional rock shelters.
Designed by Richard Jones of FJC Studio with Indigenous collaborators Shannon Foster and Jake Nash, the space serves as a cultural and event hub, concealing infrastructure and enhancing acoustics.
Originally opened in 2015, the revamped venue aims to boost tourism and local activity, though it has drawn past criticism for scrapping plans for a dedicated Indigenous cultural center.
Officials say the updated design honors the site’s history and landscape.
