OpenAI launched Atlas, an AI browser with ChatGPT integration, to challenge Chrome and boost ad revenue.
OpenAI has launched Atlas, a new AI-powered web browser, to compete with Google Chrome and capture online traffic and ad revenue. The browser, initially for Apple devices and coming to other platforms, integrates ChatGPT and features an "agent mode" that autonomously browses the web using user preferences. This move follows OpenAI’s push for profitability amid losses, despite having over 800 million ChatGPT users. Chrome remains dominant with around 3 billion users and has added AI features via Gemini. OpenAI faces steep challenges, similar to Chrome’s 2008 rise, and other AI startups like Perplexity have also entered the space, including an unsolicited $34.5 billion bid for Chrome that was rejected.
